It's a 1/4 drag event held down the seafront on Madeira Drive in Brighton (historic road down the seafront lined with stunning ornate Victorian cast-iron arches). Some truly awesome machinery present, and a fantastic variety (including this gnarly Plymouth, a Mini with a Volvo 16v turbo engine in the back, a 9.25-litre big-block Chevy Allard J2, lots of old-school Brits, drag bikes, two GT40s, an F40, a 356 and loads more). Pretty much all of it amateur-built, and great atmosphere. Flickr slideshow below :)

I can't believe I forgot all about it - I only heard about it this year and wanted to go down.

What the hell was the thing that looks like the devil's skateboard?

Yeah I missed it last year and was dead-set on going this time around.

As far as I can tell that 'devil's skateboard' is a Yamaha engine strapped to a lunatic.

It's got some sort of funny clutch setup so the chap was pushing it around. He was half-leaning over it, one knee on the seat, one leg outstretched like an oar pushing it along, his head moving in tandem with his leg and his tongue sticking out.

Nice to know the pilot is as mental as the machine :)

An engine strapped to a lunatic is the first time I've ever considered the idea that adding lightness can be taken too far. With sufficient application of money, carbon fibre, and turbos, you could probably build a 'car' lighter than me. At that point you've gone far enough.

Shit, now that's got me wondering. What's the lightest engine you can get maybe 50 horsepower out of for, oh, a day or so? If you can run a 50cc engine at 4 or 5 bar, we might get somewhere.

I was there a few years back probably 2011 with my college's Formula Renault we ran a 12.5 at 110, not bad for 160hp at the time. http://www.northbrook.ac.uk/speedtrials/
